Each year Samuel and I add a Christmas album to our collection. Once again I come to you for suggestions. Last year's winner was the King's Singers Christmas, the year before, Ella Fitzgerald. Please comment with your favorite stuff, a song, an album, sacred or secular.

it's ok, i don't feel bad about myself

I am 27 years old and just realized to-day that the word "fruit" in "Froot Loops" is spelled with two o's. I was proofreading a document with the cereal title and thought what, is it really spelled that way? Nice. At least that's not as bad as some of my other, now-remedied misconceptions:
I don't like fish, but I ate tuna all growing up, so until I was like 12 I thought "tunafish" was just a name of a food, like "watermelon" or "pizza," not a fish that swims in the sea with the name tuna.
I loved my mom's clam chowder growing up. One time I came into the kitchen as she was making it. I saw her putting clams in it. "Mom, why are you putting clams in this?" Well, it's clam chowder, she told me. "It has clams in it?" I asked her, incredulous. I haven't eaten clam chowder since. I do eat tuna, though, in case you were wondering.
One time as a teenager, I was riding in the car somewhere with my brother when we passed a field with cows. "Is it only the female cows that are used for milking?" I asked him. "Wait, don't answer that."

sistahs

Twenty-one collective children were left behind to be taken care of by friends, husbands, and grandpas. Samuel (what a guy) and I hosted for our gathering to NYC from Germany, Utah, Florida, Washington, and Colorado so we could all enjoy shopping, good food, shows, talking--it was a good weekend. Now that we've done it once we can do it better next time, but it was so fun to be with my favorite women.
No, no! We said to the guy taking the picture. Take it on 3! Not 2!
In some ways, we're very similar and in others very different. It was interesting to hear different perspectives on things from their varied life experiences. How does one be a covenant woman given her circumstances, challenges, disappointments, worries? These women are good moms. They are good people. Smart, capable. Patient. Hopefully it won't be too many years until we can do this again.

why...
do I hate dark chocolate but like York peppermint patties?
do I hate the word "patty" but like York peppermint patties?
do I hate ground meat but love sloppy joes?
do I hate ginger but like ginger ale and ginger snaps?
am I not eating tater tots?
In honor of National Punctuation Day, which is today, I have posted Victor Borge's phonetic punctuation.

alert
Mother just arrived in town...sisters to follow...I think it's going to be a great weekend.
And, after dying yesterday morning, our fridge miraculously started working again in the night. But I had already thrown away last night's dinner leftovers. I guess I'll just have to sacrifice and buy lunch today. Oh well, the hard life I lead.

don't get all morbid on me
I'm chatting with Samuel on the phone while sitting in a bank lobby on my lunch break. A man comes up to me and asks, "Are you dying?" I look at him, not responding while I try and put that question into context. "Are you dying?" He repeats. Well, no, I think. I mean, yes. I mean, not at the moment, but eventually yes, aren't we all? Man, this is a deep topic to be discussing on lunch break with a stranger. "Hold on a second, Samuel." I pull the phone away from my ear. "Excuse me?" I say to him.
"I'm looking for Diane. Are you Diane?"
"Oh...um...no, I'm not. Sorry."

i mean...really
I was just on the blog of a friend of a friend, who has listed her fall TV-show lineup. I counted. Thirty shows. Thirty. I'm not getting all uppity on anyone; I love TV...and candy, and
Coke, and fried food, and twinkies, but thirty shows? Is she planning on getting up off the couch before Christmas? I mean, TV is good, but not that good.

family moment of the week

On the left, my brother Eean in the 80s. On the right, one of his daughters, Audrey. I saw this old photo tonight and thought she looked so much like him. So cute.
